We have an annual tradition in our house where we celebrate everything that\u2019s great about American overindulgence on a single day \u2014 typically around some American football game. I think it\u2019s the championship or something; I don\u2019t really follow American football. The food is good though. This year, I decided we needed a special edition cocktail to go with it, introducing the Superb Owl Cocktail! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m subtle like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clearly, I was riffing on the name of said sporting event, but I \nstill don\u2019t care to name it outright. I did, however, take inspiration \nfrom Harry Potter and butterbeer. Yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My thoughts were twofold, if you\u2019re like me and you don\u2019t care if \nit\u2019s the Arizona Thundarrs or the New York Battlecats in the game, but \nyou immediately catch both of those references, you\u2019ll probably \nappreciate a butterbeer influenced drink and you\u2019ll enjoy that it \nresembles a very serious grown up drink, the Old Fashioned<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll call this the Refreshment of Awesome Deception (RAD for short).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I started with what I knew was a requirement: butterscotch schnapps. The biggest problem with butterscotch schnapps is that it\u2019s awfully powerful, so it was then a matter of balancing that sweetness and rounding out the flavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through some pondering and consideration, after visiting potions \nclass, I knew that a spiced rum would work very nicely with the rich \nflavors. Now we had a solid base of rum and butterscotch, which is \npretty good alone, but still needed some friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To accent the good notes, tamper down the bad ones, and let everyone \nharmonize to manage some mischief, I added peach brandy (booyacasha) and\n ginger schnapps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like that my friends, we have a Superb Owl of splendid construction and deceptive appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garnish with cherries and you really have a perfect likeness to an Old Fashioned<\/a> \u2014 except it\u2019s an adult butterbeer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, yeah, I\u2019m sure you can just get cream soda and pour in some \nbutterscotch schnapps for a more \u201cauthentic\u201d butterbeer, but that\u2019s not \nas exciting. We wanted to go high class with this. It\u2019s fancy enough to \nfool people at your own celebration of American overindulgence, but it\u2019s\n still a RAD riff off a fantasy story drink that some might argue is for\n children (the story, not the drink).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter who you\u2019re rooting for, the Thundarrs or the Battlecats, make sure the Superb Owl Cocktail is on your menu!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instructions <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Get your Invisibility Cloak.<\/li>
  • If you don’t have one, that’s fine.<\/li>
  • Add all your boozes into your cocktail glass with ice.<\/li>
  • Stir.<\/li>
  • All booze = stir.<\/li>
  • Place one magnificent piece of solid ice into your glass.<\/li>
  • Pour your stirred RAD cocktail over it.<\/li>
  • Read above to discover what RAD means.<\/li>
  • Garnish with your maraschino cherries.<\/li>
